Footprints 6 First Footing

Shoes may come and shoes may go but the ones you will never forget are your first fitted pair. The Cinderella smell of shoe shops so clean and polished, the hushed atmosphere as shoes take a turn on silent carpets before low angled mirrors, test driven to see how they feel and whether they will fit the personality of the wearer. Tape measures across insteps and sliding rulers skimming the toes to ascertain the exact width and comfort of the tender growing foot. There were even strange wooden contraptions with photographic elements where you placed your foot under a green glow for spacing to be revealed below in an underwater green negative view of your booted feet. Start Rite sandals with their cut out patterns and shining side buckles nestling in a box of tissue paper. What could be nicer. And the Start Rite children hand in hand calling to you from a poster on a wall... Didn't you long to walk down that sunny country road alongside those two endearing emblems of vintage childhood in your new shoes just like them ?! Walking happy ever after... Of course you did!
